The best asset to a women doesn’t lie visible to strangers watching the woman walk down the street. Nothing compares to a great mind with goals. Mix that in with a vision of Seattle’s first award show and you have Casey Carter. She’s been putting on for the city and all the artists for over two years and on January 15, 2012, Ms. Carter took it to the next level with her award show.
This very same day is when Mother Nature decided to bless or hurt the city with a blanket of snow. Luckily, snow can only be a slow down for unmotivated people. The Crocodile was full of nominees, their friends, industry heads and the main ingredient: fans. Everyone from Dyme Def to the lovely Dice were in the building. Comedian Nate Jackson was the host and had everyone in tears of laughter throughout the night.
Performances were a strong point in the night. Eighty4 Fly opened up the show with a quick verse over Drake’s “Light Up,” a track found on MCC Radio Vol. 1. Later in the night, three of the nominees for Freshmen paid tribute to an absent Sir-Mix-A-Lot. Shawn Kemp delivered the introduction speech (written by yours truly) before John Crown came up to do “My Hooptie”. John had most of the first verse down but couldn’t stop from stumbling a few times. Juga Hill had the odd task of “Baby Got Back”. He looked out of place but made it laughable with his energy. Finally, Royce The Choice rounded out the tribute with “Posse On Broadway”. Ah, that takes me back.
A lot of the winners didn’t seem prepared, or even present. It’s understandable not being there to accept for certain reasons but it was around two or three that weren’t present. The people who were there didn’t really seem like they’d ever watched an award show by the way they came unprepared to deliver speeches. Most came out bland.
Despite a few bumps, the Miss Casey Carter Awards is a great thing for Seattle. There is tons of talented artists that deserve to be honored in different categories. Seeing someone else get an award might even compel more artists to work harder. The goal was to have a good time and that was achieved. At the end of the night, nobody left with a frown on their face. It was all smiles.
